Since this emergency began, The following has broken down:
-My refrigerator,
-My stove,
-My microwave,
-My car,
-My sewage drains - flooded my garden with raw sewage - twice,
-My electric service - the power pole behind my house burst into flame and burned in two,
-The security system at work,
-The computer systems at work,
-The main A/C at work,
And now,
-The High Road.

Am I hexed?

Whoa. Bad luck.
Since this started , I've drank too much beer, slept until 7 am , yelled at my dog a bunch and chased my kids around yelling things like "get that rock out of your mouth" & "stop trying to brush the baby's hair with a broom".
It's been thrilling, MUST RETURN TO MY REGULAR SCHEDULE WHILE I'M STILL SLIGHTLY SANE!

Weird sometimes how things follow a pattern, once things start breaking it's like a cascade of failures. I've experienced this too in the past. Surefire way to set off a series of events like this is for it to be the worst possible time for a failure.

At least I'm still working 2 or 3 days a week but my wife has transitioned to an overnight position and works Friday and Saturday nights, which leaves me on my own to battle an 11 month old and toddler that'll be 3 in a couple weeks. It's total chaos and the little ones can smell fear. Once the chaos begins it turns into a war zone in a matter of minutes.

Now that I think of it I did have one thing break since all this. A big wart like thing on top of my old dogs head opened up and leaked gross goo out of it. Took him to the vet who charged $200 to say that when things get back to normal it should be cut off. Duh.

Stay well friends.

Yeah, I'm going to work on Monday so that I can finish the Annual Report that allows our library to maintain State Certification - if the computers are working.
We're running a skeleton crew - when I arrive, the current staffer has to leave.
Mostly we're just answering phones and renewing books - if the phones are working... .

Generally speaking, I'm in the auto repair industry. I do some race cars, some hot rods & vintage cars, some high end luxury cars and some passenger cars. It's kind of a mixed bag for me. I haven't seen any business at all for cars that are recreational. Just some typical brake & suspension work and a couple engine replacements since this all started. We've stopped taking maintenance jobs as there's no real money in it and my boss wants to cut out anything that can wait or isn't very profitable. It snowed a few inches here yesterday so it's still too cold for the old cars to come out and all my racecar stuff is long since finished (the first races should be taking place now, but are cancelled). We're just drifting along until the world reopens. I'm the only employee and our overhead is very low (located off the beaten path in an industrial park ) . so I've been working 2-3 days a week until about noon or 1:00 but my boss has paid me as though I've worked full hours, which I appreciate. But I'm a bit of a workaholic and never been off much so it's tough.

I was working from home before all of this, so I was already pretty well set up, but since wife and kids are home I am now too easily distracted and a bit scatterbrained. My honey-do list is now loooooonnnngggg.

in sympathy w OP, I’ve had a dryer go on the fritz and it opened up a whole bunch of new issues with my dryer vent and roof exhaust.

-And a year passes like nothing, but the Covid panic continues... .
(What happened to 'fifteen days to flatten the curve'?)

I've repaired or replaced
-My refrigerator,
-My stove,
-My microwave,
-And my car.

-I've capped and vented my sewage drains,
-My electric service has been supplemented by a number of solar panel installations,
-The security system at work has been patched up,
-The computer systems at work is a mess, but it's improving,
-The main A/C at work caught fire last week, but it's working now.

My little library is now running on slightly reduced hours but with a full staff and only ten patrons admitted inside at a time. Luckily, I finished the patio and sheltered patio area, so that about another ten can use those areas.

My sister left her previous position just before Covid swept through. Almost everyone there caught it. That's what happens when you share your joints... .
Anyway, now she works from home.

What has changed with you?

I guess I've gotten off easy. The other day the washer stopped working. Turned out the filter had about 12 pounds of dog hair and 65 cents in miscellaneous change in it. Not too bad a job, considering past washing machine fiascos, but Maytag did make sure that accessing the filter (a fairly routine job?) was as difficult as possible. I'm getting my motorcycle running again--I've missed it for too long.

Please...don't get me started on the stuff that's broken down for me in that same time period!

Just at work alone would make your mind boggle, as I work on aircraft carriers and subs!

:p

Seriously, though...I feel for you!

Fixed the dryer once
Fixed the washer once
Replaced the washer a couple months later
Same stove, same refrigerator, same TV. Hell, I upgraded to l.e.d. light bulbs about 5 years ago and have yet to replace one.

My "essential worker" position in auto repair meant I haven't missed a single day for Covid, but I did miss 2 in the last month because of significant snowfall.

We had our range break down, I lost my wagon in a multi-car accident. I lost a computer, and our washer. It's not been fun, but thank the gods its not as bad as what you've been facing.

I finally found out what was wrong with my stove,
Nothing.
It was the breaker that had a poor internal connection.
I finally replaced it.

-So I start up the new stove, turn on the hood vent fan and the fan starts making funny noises.
Back to EBay for a new fan... .

I feel your pain. It seems everything I own is getting worn out and is about to break down. And that applies to self as well. Can't replace self, but the other stuff ... well, it can be replaced.

not gonna lie, I had something similar happen to me with my AC condenser.
did everything I could, and could google about, to figure out why it wouldn't start.
finally called an HVAC company to come out. $175 later ($150 for the visit, $25 for the breaker) and we were back in business. Turned out one of the legs in the breaker wouldn't close any longer. I never checked the output of the breaker. Lesson learned.

this was yesterday morning...

wife woke up at 4am for her morning meeting for work (don't ask.) which of course woke me up.
5:45 rolls around and my alarm goes off, and so does the kid. he doesn't get up.
5:50 my snooze ends, still no kid.
5:55 another snooze and still no kid.
6:00 and you can guess it. wife is now pissed off. I yell at the kid, he gets up.
6:30 he tells me "my shower was cold." i'm still only firing on 1 cylinder at low compression, so it doesn't register really (you can figure where this is going though.)
6:50 and i'm dropping the kid off at school to meet the bus to VOTECH (more on that later.)
7:05 i'm home, and the wife shouts down that there's no hot water.
NOW it hits me... fuck #1. downstairs I go.
blinkie light on the water heater ain't blinking.
restart the heater, light blinks, turn the temp up, and hear the burner kick on.
watch and listen for a minute and I notice the light is blinking weird.
then it stops blinking. fuck #2.
pull the cover off, look through the sight glass, go to try and start the pilot and WOOOMP!
lots of gas ignites, i'm in need of new underroos, and there's water on my face.
wait... water? WTF?
yep, catch pan has like 1/4" of water in it.
ok. why isn't it draining. apparently when I last serviced the heater, the pan shifted and now the tank is blocking the drain port. fuck #3.
get some towels, start the sop and squeeze routine. water is leaving, but not at the rate it should be? does the tank have a leak?!?! fuck #4
check the pressure gauge I have on the drain port. 65# and steady. close off the hot and cold valves and wait. no drop in pressure.
still sopping and squeezing. got most of the water out. now the whole time the furnace has cycled 2-3 times. that's when I see it.
the drain line for the whole house humidifier, has somehow gotten into the catch pan for the water heater. fuck #5
put the hose back in the french drain, finish sopping up the rest of the water in the pan.
ok, one more try on lighting the water heater.
manual open, hit the igniter, hear the reassuring small pop, and the light starts to blink.
wait a minute to see if anything happens, then turn the temperature up.
appropriate whoosh noise, and we got the burner going.
flame color is all wrong though, orange instead of blue.
hoping it's just evap'ing/boiliing water out of the general area so I leave it.
about 10 minutes later we're back to steady blue flame at the sight port.

*sigh*... fuck #6

TL;DR: dumbass me accidentally flooded out my hot water heater burner with the drain line from the whole house humidifier.

FYI; the fuck count could be low by an order of magnitude.
i'm also DEFINITELY having a beer tonight.

eta: oh and the VOTECH thing... so the kid only had VOTECH today, because the high school had a flood after some water line broke over the weekend. ONLY the high school was closed. and the bus took him to VOTECH, but didn't bring him home. fucking hate this school system and their bullshit

I just had to re-work my propane water heater because a couple of tank refills were contaminated and pretty much plugged up the pilot light orifice.
The burner assembly is set up so that the pilot light can't be reached to clean it out.
The company that made the water heater won't service it because it was not certified for the type of building that is was installed in.
They won't sell me parts, either.
I wound up buying a natural gas burner, cutting off the (larger orifice diameter) pilot light tube from that unit and installing it in the propane burner unit.
It increases my propane use rate a little bit but it won't plug up as easily.
Anyway, now I have hot water before the next cold snap hits... .
