Planning Structure

I've invited two groups of people here:
  1. Members of THR who want a community where they can talk about things other than guns, because THR is pretty heavily moderated.
  2. Refugees (current or soon-to-be) from sites run by big tech who are being run off because your politics are no longer tolerated.
I'm looking for a site structure that serves both groups of people.

If you're coming from a reddit community, do you want to continue that community as a particular subforum where you hang out among your former friends and acquaintances, or do you want to post here and become part of the larger community? Or maybe both?

If you're coming from THR, do you want lots of subforums, or is a single place to hang out and talk about whatever going to be enough?

For now we have two subforums: Growing Pains (because new sites need lots of ironing out) and the Main Forum. For now, just post in Main and when we get a lot of posts on the same topic (like, say, national politics) we'll create an appropriate subforum and move the posts there.

As it is, I'd like your thoughts on subforums you'd like to see. Off the top of my head I'm inclined towards:
  • Tech Tyranny: for examples of political slant and dirty tricks the big tech companies are playing to stifle Internet speech. You'd probably guess this by the name of the site.
  • National and Global Politics, respectively.
  • Culture: not as in "culture wars," but rather "stuff we enjoy and want to share and talk about." Music, movies, video games, etc.
  • Video Games: if KiA wants to migrate here I'd love to see a forum for discussion of games and the idiocy we're seeing around political silliness happening in the gaming world, but it seems a bit focused. We're seeing the same sort of silliness with the Star Wars franchise, what's happening in the Marvel Universe, etc.
  • Investigations: lots of independent journalism is being done nowadays, but it's not by mainstream media and it's hard to reference months/years after it's performed. I'd love to see links to Judicial Watch, Project Veritas, and the like. I'd especially like post by people who are willing to do things like dig through the Podesta e-mails highlighting interesting information, or those who read the Mueller report and figured out all the incestuous relationships that existed between the involved parties. This is important work, and it drops from the public consciousness and is hard/impossible to find later. Let's make it easier to find.
  • Between Friends: a place for folks to talk about normal stuff. Probably available only to logged in users, maybe with a minimum post count to view it, or the ability to enable/disable visibility for people who simply aren't interested in community and are more into politics and conservative thought you can't get other places.
  • No Negativity: sometimes you just want cute, happy stuff. That goes here.
If we host refugees from t_d or KiA do we want subforums to host those discussions separately? Are there online personalities that want to participate (or that people want to talk about) that want a subforum specific to them? Does that make sense, or should it just be merged into the other content here, maybe with a special tag (like the green Planning tag on this thread)?

I'd love to hear your thoughts. This is just part of our growing pains.

Perhaps sub forums may become obvious due to content. ex: Might get a good deal of camping content ergo a Camping sub forum might evolve. Maybe you might find there are snowbirds or potential snowbirds showing up and a sub forum might evolve out of that for good places to go for the winter, or cheaper rentals etc.

I agree completely. Plan on change over time.

After thinking about it for a few days let's just start with general and see what shakes out
