Patriot Act II Domestic Terrorism

I’ve noticed the start of a push to do something about “domestic terrorism” since the El Paso shooting. The scary thing is that I’m not seeing it much in the usual media outlets. I’m seeing it in publications that cover the defense industry. This is significant because I saw Patriot Act I proposed in those same publications in the late 1990s when the defense industry was looking for ways to keep the tax money flowing in a world without a peer or near peer threat to the United States. Most of what ended up in the USA Patriot Act that congress raced to pass after 9-11 was proposed in these articles and studies. Congress didn’t burn any midnight oil coming up with that legislation after 9-11, it was already written for them.

Patriot Act II will be the end of the Bill of Rights. If they apply the provisions in Patriot Act I domestically it will ensure one party rule. People like Morris Dees will decide what political organizations are domestic terrorist organizations. It’s also likely to give authority for the “civilian defense force equipped and trained as well as the military” that Obama proposed in his first campaign. If anyone wonders what this will look like, just look at the news coverage of the Hong Kong protests and the Chinese paramilitary police staging outside of Hong Kong in a show of force.

All these articles are bemoaning the fact that we can’t use the provisions of the USA Patriot Act domestically yet they pay little attention to constitutional protections of political speech.

Scary stuff here. I’m betting model legislation has already been written and they are just waiting for the next attack to propose it.

Frightening, indeed.

Patriot Act was major strike one for Bush 2 in my book. "Enhanced interrogation" and "rendition" was more than enough for him to fully lose my trust and respect.

At 71 I would rather lead a quiet, peaceful life, but it is lookingy more and more likely I'll be maning a barricade.

Looking more and more like moving to another country might be less stressful and a lot more peaceful

I graduated law school in 2002, and there was a lot of talk about the Patriot Act as it was rammed through. The general consensus was "oh, crap."
