Of course, there were a few selected places in the US where this sh!t had to start, cacafornia, shitcago, destroit, philly or DC are coming to my mind.

WTF? Waking up and reading this crap early in the morning spoils the whole week, and I have to control my anger and get ready for work, but I'll return on the next weekend to blow off some steam !

Just wanted to add that this action is typical of a left-wing "woke" city council, and if you want to see what happens to a city when it's ruled by such watch this documentary about Seattle produced by Seattle's KOMO TV station:

Big cities, in general, are dying.
Most have out-lived the reasons that they were established and have not created new reasons for their continued existence.
As city living becomes more expensive and less convenient and jobs become more decentralized, expect to see big cities become vote farms that drive more and more industries and productive people away through high taxes and progressive policies... .

Evanston is a dump. There's a college there and the woke mob is the norm, no surprise . these morons do wander out this way sometimes but you wouldn't catch me dead in their crime ridden cesspool . reparations are such a joke, impossibly moronic. How can they take money from people who never owned slaves and give it to people who never were slaves? Ridiculous .

How about folks who have dark skin but came to this country 20 years ago? Eligible ? How about white folks who came here 20 , oh hell, 120 years ago- they still owe? Utter nonsense. As I mentioned elsewhere on this forum, my family didn't step foot on this continent until after 1900, we owned zero slaves, I owe nothing to anyone .

I had a "conversation " with my moron mother about native Americans once. She said she felt had for all we took from them. I told her to feel free to donate all her property, she didn't like that idea. Then I asked her what I've inherited , land? Nope. A herd of creatures ? Nope. A family home? Not even close. So again, I owe nothing .

When I asked her why she thinks white folks are so privileged I got some lefty blabber that didn't make sense . I told her there are college funds and various rights and allocations for minorities that aren't available to me, sounds like I'm the one who's been disadvantaged .

If people that claim to seek equality actually seek the opposite . equal means that you get treated the same regardless of the color of your skin, not that you'll be treated with preference because someone sees you as a victim. We've had a black president , no one is holding anyone down. A culture that glorifies poor grammar , crime, drugs, ignorance and hate is bad- doesn't matter the color of the skin. We have a culture problem here in the US , only way to fix it is to stop catering to people who refuse to do for themselves.

Long overdue . . . should have happened 150 years ago, failing that, 100 years ago, and failing that, definitely 60 years ago. It is a debt long unpaid . . .

As recently as the 1970s black American schoolchildren faced these morons for simply wanting equal education in Boston. What is the dollar value of education? What is the dollar value of segregation, Jim Crow, prejudice in hiring, housing, and legal protection? What is the dollar value of the corrupt 'convict labor' system? Who paid for the burned-out businesses of Tulsa? How many billions of dollars did African American families lose over the century of suppression?

You've removed all doubt in my mind, you are oblivious to reality. Debt overdue??? How can I owe for a crime I didn't commit? How can someone be owed for an injustice that was committed to a distant relative? How much is enough?
Every racial group has been disadvantaged at one point or another, so what?
If you're feeling guilty as a Democrat for slavery ( which maybe you should) donate your property to a minority organization. The first Republican president freed the slaves and conservatives seek equality for all to this day. The segregationist clowns are democrats, always have been. So maybe I can understand your guilt. As soon as anyone of any color supports different or special treatment based on race, they're racist by definition. Hence , supporting reparations is racist. I don't expect you to understand, it's obvious you're world view is warped and your head is full of poison. Enjoy your life, if possible- or find more things to complain about.

Don't you understand?
It's a matter of original sin that can only be absolved by taking everything away from some scapegoats and making an offering of these goods to some representations of that sin, thus making the sinners righteous.
Don't try to argue religion with a true believer... .

The best part is, its not even America's original sin. Slavery existed long before America did, and slaves were brought here by Europeans long before we were a nation. Not to mention slavery existed amongst some indian tribes long before Europeans set foot on the continent. That probably didn't count though since those slaves weren't black and their enslavers weren't white.

The failures of the past cannot be undone. Nor should they be erased from history. I do not believe any amount of money now handed to the living can make up for what happened to those long gone. But I do believe the inequalities that still echo from the past can be resolved.

An investment in education and improvements to real estate, infrastructure and healthcare services in black communities would go a long way to ensuring future generations are playing on a level field. And those things would also improve the lives of the current generations. Would that mean spending taxpayer money? Yes. But if the goal is to remove the racial disparities and tensions, I see no better option.

And the easiest way to do this is to ignore race entirely, and instead focus on improving the most impoverished communities in America. Handing out money based on race is not a good solution, in my opinion. Give a man a million dollars, and regardless of his race, he'll likely as not spend it like it was free fun money.

It's that whole "give a man a fish, vs teach a man to fish" thing. If we want future generations to be better educated, healthier, more productive, and less criminally motivated, we need to help the impoverished communities to help themselves.

Pay close attention to my post, not what you imagined I posted. I specifically referred to the fact that one particular group was systematically disadvantaged economically for more than 100 years, after the Civil War, without any economic recompense. It is a simple economic fact that the number one predictor of the financial success of an individual is the economic position of their parents. If you prevent their parents from acquiring a middle-class position, you are preventing them from becoming middle-class (statistically).

More than any other group, blacks were prevented from acquiring property, jobs, higher educations, and political positions. All of those acts, made by governments specifically, had long-term economic ramifications. For example, the State of Georgia went out of its way to prevent blacks from acquiring education at the state universities. Since higher education is a major factor in economic success, that law prevented economic advancement for blacks. Absolutely no question about it. That makes the State of Georgia directly responsible for a significant element of economic disparity in its citizens. This is not some distant set of events by an ancient empire - many of the victims of Georgia's actions are still alive today, and would be more economically successful had not Georgia committed those acts of economic oppression.

Yes, it would be nice if we could ignore race, but that fact is, much or the US didn't, which directly led to the continued economic disadvantage of American blacks. And now, when blacks have more economic and political power, you hear people suddenly saying how we should ignore race. How convenient!

People complain about how this might affect their taxes. Spare me. We paid 2 trillion dollars for a failed war in Iraq. That is literally enough for half a million dollars for every single African American in the USA. And no one is talking about simply cutting big checks - every proposal relates to education and business or home investments.

I hear you say that you are being punished for something you did not do. Hardly, but they actually were, far more than you could every be. We can mitigate the moral debt of 100 years and we should. We have a debt, and we should discharge that debt, as we would with any other that the country acquires.

Oh man. That is not what is meant by 'original sin'. It means that the sin relates to one's origin, not that they 'invented' it, or were the first to do it. The point is that America's founding document, the US Constitution, enshrined slavery, in the 3/5 Compromise. And instead of atoning for that moral sin after the issue of slavery was settled by the Civil War, the US South, and many us jurisdictions elsewhere, doubled down on the immorality with segregation, lynching, convict labor, etc..

You may be sure that educated people are well aware of the universality of slavery throughout history. Haven't you ever seen 'Sparticus'?

Race is a lie, used to justify the subjugation and enslavement of those that were in some way different from the enslavers.
Race implies that those "others" are in some way lesser creatures, not really people, not really human.
Those "lesser races" have included every ethnicity over time.
Just in North America during the last 400 years, the "lesser races" have included people from every European country, Native Americans, Asians, those from the Middle East, Pacific Islanders, and, of course, people from Africa.
To rip off all of those other people in an effort to cater to people with some African ancestry is absurd.
I believe that we should help people that need and will accept help, whatever their ancestry and appearance.
Anything else would be racist... .

More like $47,000- double check your math.

We still search out the old art and gold hidden by Nazis and return it to the descendants of the murdered Jews. How is this different?
Because the objects are physical property rather than currency paid to settle an alleged debt that no one would dare put a dollar amount on. If they found a slaves personal belonging and decided they'd find the descendant of said slave to return the property to, no argument.

I am not the state of Georgia , the law makers responsible are no longer in power and that injustice is gone.
Should I Perdue a vendetta against the railroad company that my great grandfather was indentured to when he came to north America? Maybe hit them up for some free stuff? Nope, I'm my own man. I make my own fate. I've inherited zero. I've been given zero. I've done absolutely nothing but work since I was legally able to and I expect nothing but fair treatment. How is my situation one bit better than a person who's skin color happens to be different? It's not a factor. If you think there weren't white folks abused and taken advantage of in the past century then you've got your blinders on. Are their descendents entitled to some kind of compensation by the descendants of their abusers ? Can't be.

now, when blacks have more economic and political power, you hear people suddenly saying how we should ignore race. How convenient!
Some of us have wanted to make race a nonissue for a long time .

Point is retribution for previous generations sins is nothing but pandering. A humans life can not be compensated for. There is no white guy or black guy difference in the law, that's been corrected. Everyone must stand on their own with what they've been given, expecting special treatment further drives the narrative that minorities are somehow incapable of providing for themselves , it reinforces it, it adds fuel to the welfare state. Who can prove their ancestors were oppressed , what proof should be required that their dad didn't migrate here from Africa in the 70s? Just skin color?
How long does this debt last? Can I file a claim with the Italian government that they potentially enslaved and stole from my ancestors back 2000 years ago? If one claim is legit so should mine be.

It's all bullshit, I don't care what color someone is and they shouldn't care what color I am. Seeing it any other way IS racist , period.

Here's a couple Dr king quotes relavant to the discussion
martin-luther.jpg

Color of one's skin should gave zero bearing on what privileges they enjoy- THAT WOULD CLEARLY INCLUDE REPERATIONS .

2KingProgressMemeIronic.png

Gosh, who is it that's obsessed with racism? Oh yeah, the party that's responsible for slavery and the same one that's pushing for reparations .

Open your mind, be better than the scum democrat morons.

Ya - I concede on the extra zero!

But otherwise, no. You are confused about the justification for the reparations. We are not going to compensate these people because they are black. We are compensating them because they and their ancestors were victimized because they are/were black. No one is just going to offer payment based on the color of skin. It is because of lost economic opportunities because of what was done to them. In the case of Evanston, IL, it was due to specific actions by the government of Evanston that caused economic harm. And the people have to show that they were or their ancestors were in Evanston from 1919-1969 and have to demonstrate that they suffered harm because of their racist policies. It is not for just any Black person.

We have precedent for this - the Japanese-Americans interned during World War II. They had their civil rights denied under color of martial law (unlawfully, as the Supreme Court later determined). They were interned for two years, and most lost their homes, farms, and businesses because of lost earnings during the years they were imprisoned. This is, of course, while the Japanese-American 442 Regiment was fighting in Europe against the Nazis and becoming the most decorated unit in US military history.

In 1988 the US Government payed each internee the 2021 equivalent of ~$43,000 for the economic damage done by the internment. This was an acknowledgement of economic damage done to a people because of race, not a payment because of race.

It is nice that you, theotherwaldo, wiscoaster are saying that we should ignore race. But, the damage was done in the name of race and we can't just turn around now and say, 'oh, right, we should ignore race, after all'. The harm has already been inflicted. There is a group that has suffered economic impacts from racist policies, and much like to the Japanese Americans, we owe a debt.
