I re-read Rear Admiral Edward Ellsberg's The Far Shore, an account of the landing and the aftermath by the salvage master that made the mad plans of the generals and admirals work... mostly.
He's the main reason the artificial harbor actually arrived off of Normandy and then served through most of the rest of the war, even after the disastrous storm on June 20th. He also managed the wreckage on the beach and then the mess at Cherbourg. and the various ports along the way to Allied victory... .
