going postal

Let me think about that for a moment, a tax payer subsidized group of people with incredible benefits which never made any profit (at least not in my lifetime) and gives crappy service is now spying on us?

There has hardly ever been a threat from outsiders against the employees of the postal service, they get usually killed by their own, hence the term going postal.

You can bet on the fact that they are doing much more spying than the article lets us know.

Time to get rid of them!

Having been a postal employee, I can tell you that the USPS is the institution that is handed the job of monitoring for attempts at fraud or other crimes that are committed using the mail or other communication systems, especially if the attempt crosses state lines.
You can't perform this task without "spying".
I don't condone this, but I can understand it.

well, lets see, ordered a t-shirt the 13th of April, it was handed over to the usps on the 17th and is now in cacafornia, opposite direction of Ohio.
There is something wrong with this picture.
The original given delivery date was the 22nd of April, then it was changed to the 26th.
And it is such a nice and offensive t-shirt, wanted to wear it in the liberal shithole of columbus, OH.

Used to be able to send packages (called slow boat to china) in the 80's and 90's to Germany to my family, packed these about 6-8 weeks before Christmas and shipped them.
This service no longer available, only pre-approved/sized/charged small boxes (the cheapest $14, contents 4oz max) which automatically makes the box way more expensive than the contents are worth.

First class stamp: 1983_22 Cents,
2021_55 Cents

Not saying that the usps is completely useless, but look at UPS and Fedex, not exactly cheap, but reliable, and they are making profit.
Why?
Privatized. Everything any government on this planet is touching gets f@cked up.
Why?
The people ''working'' there have great benefits, cannot (for the most part) get fired and have very little responsibilities.
They can hide their ineptness in the system and are usually promoted to the highest level of their incompetence.

Okay, enough bitching for today, I almost feel like a women.........................

Well, that's not limited to the USPS. That's pretty typical of any large organization with an ossified management structure. More typical of government organizations because people can't be fired, and reorganization is difficult. I remember the large corporation I used to work for where the way the management structures were organized were shaken up and reorganized every few years, with some execs getting new titles but less responsibility, but others getting new and interesting challenges and more responsibility, and I think counteracting the "Peter Principle" (which is what the phenomenon @str8_forward describes is named) was a primary motivation of the CEO. Your non-performers, misfits and squeaky wheels can be shunted off into the less important groups and divisions, or transferred and named to head the minority-ownership subsidiary company in Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. If they're at all smart they realize they've just ended up in a dead-end career-wise and they start sending out resumes. Nobody gets fired ... they just eventually disappear from the corporate up-and-comers group.

Why would the USPS need to make a profit? No other federal organization is obliged to do so.
Blame it on Pres. George W. Bush and the "Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006" which "semi-privatized" the USPS, which gave it some relief from employee pension and welfare benefits in exchange for "paying its own way" a la private corporation balance-sheet accounting, but at the same time dealt that concept a death-blow by putting limits on various cost-dependent fees. This is the major reason you get so much junk mail. They can send it to you for much less than it costs the post office to deliver it to you. If you're going to require a public entity to account for its income and outgo like a private entity, then you can't expect it to also operate like a public entity.

Yeah - part of the knee-jerk impulse to privatize everything, and still expect it to be a public service.
